You must configure your operating system so that it can communicate with the network adapter card. In many cases, you must manually configure the adapter card so that it can communicate with the operating system. This involves a lot of clicking on considerable boxes to configure various network components. These components are the parts of computer software that allow it to communicate with the network. Some components have to added, others to be removed.

Steps involved in configuring NIC are:

1. Move the mouse-pointer over the Start button and click the left mouse-button. A push-up menu appears.

2. Inside the push-up menu, move the mouse-pointer over the Control Panel option and click the left mouse-button.

3. A Control Panel window appears. Move the mouse-pointer over the Network Connections icon and double-click the left mouse-button.

4. A Network Connections window appears with icon of LAN.

5. Move the mouse-pointer over the LAN icon and click the right mouse-button. A shortcut menu appears. Inside the shortcut menu, click over the Properties option.

6. A Properties dialog box for LAN connection appears. In the box, you will see name of NIC and other components. If there are some unwanted components, remove them by clicking once on each item, then clicking the "Uninstall" button. Do this until your screen shows only the network card as shown below.

7. When your screen looks similar to , move the mouse-pointer over the Install button and click the left mouse- button.

8. You will see the Select Network Component Type dialog box. During the course of card configuration, you will see this dialog box many times. Now, move the mouse-pointer over the Client option and click the left mouse-button. Next, move the mouse-pointer over Add button and click the left mouse-button.

9. A Select Network Client dialog box appears. Now, click on the Client for Microsoft Networks option to highlight it. Next. click on the OK button.

10. The Select Network Component Type dialog box reappears. This time you need to add service. Click on the Service option to select it. Next, click on the Add button.

11. A Select Network Service dialog box re-appears. Click on the File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks option.

12. Next, click on the OK button.

13. A Select Network Component re-appears. Click on the Protocol option to select it.

14. Next. click on the Add button.

15. A Select Network Protocol dialog box re-appears. Under Manufacturers option, click on the Microsoft. Under Network Protocols option, click on the TCP/IP.

16. Next, click on the OK button to install it.

17. The Properties dialog box re-appears on the screen, with a list of options.

18. Click on Internet Protocol (TCP/lPI to highlight it. Now click on the Properties button. An Internet Protocol (TCP/ IPI Properties dialog box appears.

19. Move the mouse-pointer over the radio button beside Use the following IP address and click the left mouse-button.

20. The text under the Use the following IP address option enables. Type your desired IP address. For instance. type 192.0168.0.27.

21. After typing the IP address. press the Tab key on the keyboard. Text box beside Subnet mask gets filled automatically with some values.

22. Next. click on the OK button.

23. The Properties dialog box re-appears. Click on OK button. If may need to restart your computer to put changes into effect.
