Default Can i switch off my router

We are constantly being asked to save energy and always switcb off the power to my computer when I am not using it. Just recently I have started using broadband and some of my friends say they never switch their router off because it is not recommended. cannot see any reason why it should not be switched off and energy saved. My router power supply transformer has an output of 18 volts and 1
amp, which equates to 18 watts. Would it not save this power if it were switched off?

You're right, it would save a fair bit of electricity if you switched off your router. The
problem is that modern routers are not designed to be switched on and off frequently, and doing' so too often might actually damage them.

It's unlikely to cause a problem if you only switch it off once every couple of days, though. Certainly, if you're not going to be using your broadband connection for more than a few days it's worth switching off the router.

What with these being the days of all sorts of internet connected gadgets, many people find it convenient to keep the router on as a general rule because it means you can quickly get internet access should you need it. It's true that this convenience factor should be weighed against the energy that is being used up while the router is idle.
Do bear in mind, though, that the voltage and current ratings quoted on the device are maximum values, and that the router is unlikely to consume the full amount all the time.
