Thread: Varying of Domain for Controllers

I have some questions related to the hardware in my domain controller. I’m generally rebuilding it with a new Processor, RAM, Mobo, etc. It’s just a desktop computer which is running a Windows Server 2003. I also made a plan to keep all the names of the machine and IP/domain the same. Is there anything which I may require to lookout for by doing this? I don’t want to lose my active directory and the user accounts on the machines that are been related on this domain controller. Can I just build the new server, set it up as a domain controller with all the same settings and the computers will be able to log into the new controller with the same users?

I don't advocate doing what you are planning to do. I will not built in a totally new server, promote it, wait for AD to duplicate, transfer everything off the old one, and then devalue the old one with the new one.

Ah I see, so the new controller in an existing forest?? I believe that there is an option which gives when supporting a new controller. So in a sense that it’s going to be the backup domain controller until I devalue the original one from it.
