Default Sluggish network for my computer.

I have been demanding to cut off and correct a "networking condition". I also used "Speedtest.net" to find out my upload and download speeds. My home has also been pre-wired with coaxial cable. It has a 4-way signal splitter. I've tried 2 dissimilar Linksys routers with the same results. I have a PC in the bsmt. And used my laptop upstairs.
With my PC in the bsmnt. I am capable for getting it eliminates the router by plugging an Ethernet cable straight into the HS modem which eliminates my speed problem (12Mbts/3Mbts).
With a router connected my download speed 400Kbts, with and upload speed of around 3Mbts. Any opinion of anyone. 4-way splitter? Or router? Thanks

Let's have the precise make and the model of the modem to start it.

The first was a Linksys "Wireless-G (WRT54G) with 2 antennas, and the 2nd and existing one is a Linksys "RangePlus" (WRT110) that I was set to "G" only.

A 4-way splitter is not the ideal, but as you have got your full speed and with no trouble for connecting it to the modem, your ISP, your coax, your splitter and also your modem are all OK. Confirm with you that are you having the latest firmware upgrade for the router; then reset it to the factory default settings and reconfigure it. Are you receiving those pitifully slow downloads with Ethernet or only with wireless?

Thanks. I'll check on the latest firmware and give it a try when I come back in a week. I'm also interested as to how you came to know about the eliminating of the 4-way splitter?

I implicit that the 4-way splitter was a still in the play for this test. If so, then it must not be reason for the problem.

The cable modem which needs the least attenuation of the signal. What you must have is a 2:1 high quality splitter which is straightly at the service access. One cable from the splitter (making use of high quality cable like RG-6U), must also go directly to the modem. Any TV's should be fed with an extra splitting off the other leg of the 2:1 splitter.

That sounds like a good plan. When I will get back when I'll pick up that 2:1 splitter and an added 3way splitter for the TV's. One time I get this high speed problem fix I will plan to install a "wireless access point" for an internet connection to a HD TV.

I make out that when I had Comcast; I too had to run a improved cable for my modem for extremely comparable matter.

I surely do not disagree with "should have is a 2:1 high quality splitter directly at the service entrance." I almost suggested you with the same advice. But if he is receiving "12Mbts/3Mbts" with a computer which is been connected directly to the modem, why then the 4-way splitter is possible reason of "download speed 400Kbts" with a router between the computer and modem? Does having a router in its place of a computer connected to the modem make that big a difference if the modem is getting a weaker signal?
