Help for connection issue

I owe a HP Pavilion 1240n with windows XP with its service pack 2, and then I connected it to my external modem where there are no problems, but when I try to connect it to my netgear WGR614v7 router (which has 3 other pc's on it working smoothly) I my now getting limited or no connectivity with no internet, some of my friend told me to run "cmd" :ipconfig, it displayed the automatic IP configuration of 169.254.158.223 (I would be able to copy and paste if I’m running internet on it) someone also advised me that it is meant for assigning its own IP rather than receiving it from the router. I also went to the router settings page and from there the best I can tell all the settings are been correct as it was set for DCHP but there is no setting for regulating how many computers you are been allowed on it so I’m considering all the 4 ports which must work but I even tried it with it by itself, I also made an attempt for formatting the computer and then re-installing the operating system and 3 dissimilar realtek network cards as well as with the drivers and I went back to the onboard LAN and it gave me just a good IP address from the router so I started running the netgear installation disc and it said that I’m having a connection, when it got to the end it stuck up stating that there was no connection it has back to incomplete connectivity and went back to the old atou config ip address, like I had said that if I connect to the modem it then just works fine but not with the router.

A 169 IP address it means that it’s not getting the DNS information from the router been installed in the computer. Why would you will consider for running the netgear installation disk if the machine works and it is been connected?

It is sounding like a bad cable or the port on the Netgear is been corrupted. Are you able to disconnect the network cable from one of the working PCs and then plug it back with it into the questionable computer?

Well, the first question is that who has setup the router in your computer? They might be having MAC filtering or are been restricted with the DHCP address pool to just enough for the three connections. Are the three other machines which are connected are making a use of a wired connection or wirelessly? Have you made an attempt to different cable and a different port on the router?
