    Default Internet connection via cable

I have this old PC that I would now like to put the network jointly with a newer PC. The old PC has two serial ports and no USB ports, so I was of opinion that it might be that I could network them mutually with a USB-to-Serial cable. The issue is that I am running into is that all the USB-to-Serial cables that I have located so far are not more than 16" long.
    Two questions:
    1) Is the detail that these cables come in such short length possibly a sign that it is not desirable to connect the two PCs jointly with a USB-to-Serial cable?
    2) What freeware do you advocate for coordinating the files on two PCs which are been connected together in such method?

    Thanks.

You cam make use of an addition serial port cable to "extend" the USB Serial cable in this type of situation. You'll also require for what is called as a null-modem cable for this type of task. You can also take a look at the ZIP221; it's a usefulness which I made use of it about years ago for this task when you get the cables differentiated out.
Note that you'll also be liable to have to make sure the USB Serial adapter is been configured for COM1 or COM2.

    Thanks for your reply.
I fail to remember to mention that I know completely nothing about the networking/connecting PCs together. What precisely is the reason of a null-modem cable in this circumstance, and where does it need to be plugged in?

A null modem which overturn the send and receive connections on the cable so that the send wire on one computer is the receive wire on the other computer and vice-versa. Exclusive of the null modem, both computers would be chatting on the same wire and no one would be listening. Also be conscious about this connection is drop-dead slow as evaluate to other network.

By the way, you don't require knowing much about networking for making use of it. If both the computers are having a network card, then all you will require a crossover cable that can be as long as 285 feet. All you'd have to do there is plug the cables in and wait for it. They will ultimately connect to each other mechanically if the defaults are been set.

This is an appealing suggestion, from you... I believe that I will have to try it and see that what will take place! Where would I receive the information on how to set the defaults for such type of connection? I also have Windows XP Professional SP3.

Yes sir, the link did not explain the whole meaning of a null-modem cable in terms that laymen like me can comprehend it! In any case, gently gave me the explanation which I was looking out for.
