Thread: Observing of Network

I have a home network, and I end up with paying way too much since I have a restricted bandwidth. There are many computers running at my home, I'd like to provide all the computers only one static IP and allow the router to supply me with daily, weekly, and monthly reports on the data which is uploaded as well as downloaded by each client. I make out that I can't do this in the course of the router, as of its inadequate capability, but how is this possible? I'm also looking for a solution which won't clearly affect the internet speed.

If it means setting up a server, I'm also ready to do that too.

Have you checked out wireshark? There may be a bit like killing a fly with a sledgehammer, but it runs on Linux very fine.

There are also some switches (I’m unable to memorize it for my life, even though if there was any switch I would remember it) that if you run in, I think that, the full transmit mode, you can record everything. And as a result, take a big portion out of the channel.

As soon as I got the MoBo fixed/replaced, I'll then make sure it out. I had also initially planned to run FreeNAS on that while not did it. I also speculate that if FreeNAS can also monitor the bandwidth?

I disbelief that FreeNAS has any kind of bandwidth monitoring facility, that's not its function for accessible.

It appears like my NAS dream will have to remain, and I by now have 2 500GB WD HD’s set for Raiding.

The wiresharks has got a LOT of buttons and I'm interested to push up the buttons, but I haven't entirely figured this application out yet but it's a stout toy for freeware.

Wireshark is a very usable function when you're executing the entire oddball network problem. It will also permit you to supervise what comes and goes on your machine.

That's the way how I have tripped over it. Also seemed for something which could tell me who was knocking on the door and at what time. Got a bit more than I negotiate for. Presently I'm learning just have some patience and I'll get this network stuff all arranged out anyhow.

Well I've got the whole thing up and running. I have 3 laptops and 2 desktops which are well connected to the wireless router. I also have the server which is well linked directly to the router. The router's WAN port is also associated to the modem, which attaches to everyone. So how do I make use of the server, which is having the wireshark installed on it, to examine how much of the internet bandwidth is being used by each of the wireless user?

There are many software available on Google itself to monitor your network activity like spiceworks, looklan, bandwidth monitor. These are freeware and easy to use.
