In a nutshell, routers perform exactly what their name says: They route data from a LAN to a different router, after that a different router, and so on until data is received at its destination. Routers also work as traffic cops; permits only authorized systems to pass on data into the local network so that private information can remain secure. In addition to supporting these dial-in and leased connections, routers also handle errors, keep network usage statistics, and handle security issues.

Thanks for the information, not many people know but router is responsible for allowing the Internet to exist. I mean there are many other important constituents binding the world wide web, but router is one of the most significant.
