Shadow duplicates are utilized as a way to addition your usual backup and to permit administrators or even users to restore earlier editions of their files if wanted. It is only accessible on Windows Server 2003 and Shadow Copy Client should be installed on every workstation. You can obtain client installation software.

After it is enabled on server and client is installed on workstation you will have a choice to restore earlier editions of shared files and folders. When you right tick a file or folder you will notice a Previous Versions tab. There will be earlier editions of files and folders that have been before changed that you will be able to select from.

Intervals for copies to be created can be placed on server to suit your requirements. Be sure not to do it too frequently or through peak network usage time otherwise network traffic will experience.

From here you can select which edition to go back to. You have choice to either view file to see if you want to reinstate it, copy file anywhere else so you can compare copy to current version or restore the file over the current copy. If file has not been altered then you will not see any earlier editions to be able to go back to.

Setting up Shadow Copies on server is quite easy. Right tick My Computer and choose Manage. Then you will right tick Shared Folders, tick All Tasks and then Configure Shadow Copies. You get configuration screen.

Now you can choose which drive or drives you would like to enable Shadow Copies on. You can organize choices like what drive you want copies to be created on and how much space you want to assign to copies. You can also delete earlier copies to obtain disk space back. There are also choices for scheduling frequency that copies will be created.

Note that if you attempt to go back to an earlier version while logged in locally on server you will not have that choice unless you browse to location using a UNC path before a local path.
