Default Explorer.exe consuming more than 55 percent of CPU power

Hello, I have an HP Pavillion DV2762TX laptop. The configuration is as follows: Windows Vista Home Premium SP2, 2GB RAM, 160 GB HOD, 128 MB Integrated Graphics, Intel Core 2 Duo 1.83 GHz CPU. The problem now here is that the process 'explorer.exe' is using 55 percent of the CPU without any reason. No program is opened or running, but it is still consuming CPU capacity. Two weeks ago, I restored my laptop to its original factory shipped settings, and later I installed Windows Vista SP1 and then SP2. I installed Norton Internet Security and some other programs after that. I have disabled the Paging File option and Windows Update is enabled. Please help me to solve this problem. Thanks.

Please ensure that your computer is not infected by a virus or malware. Usually, a virus infection triggers extensive CPU usage and slows down the computer. Have your PC scanned using a good antivirus program and make sure it is constantly updated. Since you have mentioned that the system was restored to the original Windows Vista, check if the Service Pack patches you installed later are not infected. Check at stages when restoring if the problem occurs. You should be able to find the problem. Also, it is not recommended to disable the page file completely, as this will dramatically reduce your PC's speed while loading applications and multitasking.
