Switches and routers need to have as many ports as possible. For a home router, look for the number of wired and wire¬less connections that can be made to the router. Home routers should have at least four wired ports.

When it comes to selecting a switch, try and find one with a suitable number of ports. A hub is not the same as a switch, although their function is the same. A hub also performs slower than a switch, so always opt for a switch.
