    Default Splitting connection into two

I have a You Telecom 512 Mbps broadband (Password & Login Required) connection. It uses a cable modem. I want to split the connection into two - one for my desktop and the other for my friend's laptop. A router is not an option, since we are really tight on budget Both PCs may be used at the same time, or individually also. I'm consider¬ing buying a cheap 5 port switch that I saw online. However, the You Telecom guys says that a switch won't work and that I need to opt for a Proxy or Router. Is this true?
Missing location errors maybe caused by a worm or virus Can you please guide me through the process of setting up a switch? I have never handled a switch before, and dont know if it is plug and play or needs to configured. And also provide alternate options if possible.

Firstly, I'm not sure what the terms and conditions of the connection are. You can't split up the connection at the cable end. The easiest way is to use a router. A switch will only let you setup connec¬tions between multiple PCs, but may not let you share the internet connection. You'll need to set up one of your PCs as a gateway, and have the other connect to it through a switch. This main PC must always be on if you want internet access on the other Pc. Windows has an inbuilt internet sharing feature that can be used to achieve what you're trying to do.
