Past many years computer networks have changed a lot. Earlier simply the corporations could yield to install high speed networks within their buildings and also to have a shared Internet connection.
I recall the days when the low cost latest network parts was more valuable than the second hand computer I have bought at the time. The only sustitute was to attach the computers using a little more pricy networkcards that didn’t require a hub, just long BNC cables connected in a string to all the computer and with a exterminator at both ends. This solution was very much slow, only 10Mbps total bandwidth, shared by all users. At the time we had a 128KBPS Internet connection through a cable modem so it was sufficient for the 8 users in our building.
