The error 'Cannot open file: it does not appear to be a valid archive' is a warning that most users are familiar with and it refers to a corrupted ZIP archive. Zip Repair from GetData is a compression file recovery software that promises to repair your ZIP archives.

Features

Zip Repair Pro analyzes corrupt Zip files and allows you to save an error-free copy of the file. The way the program works is that instead of replacing the corrupt ZIP file, it creates an error-free backup of your original file for instaFlt access. It fixes CRC errors in the damaged files so that data can still be uncompressed. CRC stands for Cyclic Redundancy Check, which is an error-detecting code.

The look and feel of Zip Repair is visualized by its simple user interface and it comes with full install and uninstall support. The repair tool can process individual, spanned or batches of ZIP files. Support of spanned, which is just another term for spilt ZIP archives, comes in handy since the program can repair and extract from a spanned ZIP set even if part of the set is missing. Plus, the size or volume doesn't really matter, since it can repair files larger that 2 GB, as long as there is appropriate disk space available on the hard drive. It has been tested on files of up to 4GB in size. Plus, the generated process log can be saved for future reference.

In the repair process. the tool gives importance to security, and consequently leaves the damaged original untouched and only works with a copy. While it is fast, the result is not always satisfactory. The application failed in our tests, while repairing files prepared by us, which had damaged file headers. The tool did create a repaired output file, but it was absolutely empty. However. the manufacturer promised to update it, and in the future, the program will immediately inform the user if a repair is not possible, on account of a damaged file header.

The program fared better when tested on repairing divided ZIP files. In the test, we split an archive into 41 files and deleted one of them. Zip Repair correctly put the contents of the remaining 40 back together. The only drawback in this test scenario"was that it ignored the directory chosen by us to store the repaired copy and placed it in the folder with the corrupt archive. With this release, Zip Repair comes with support for the Zip64 format, which is commonly used in archives that are larger than 4 GB, or comprise more than 65,565 files.Unfortunately, the tool does not support widespread compression formats like RAR, GZIP or TAR.
