The spell check utility in Word is by far the most accurate dictionary available which you can easily update. But there may be instances when it may not correct misspelled words. Listed below are some of the common problems that you may face, with possible solutions.
First, check if misspelled words are all in uppercase. If so, the option of ignoring words typed in uppercase might be turned on.To turn off this feature in Word 2003, carry out the following steps:
Go to the 'Tools Options'.
Go to the 'Spelling & Grammar' tab from the 'Options' dialog box.
Uncheck the 'Ignore Words in UPPERCASE' option.
Click 'OK' to save changes.
To turn off this feature in Word 2007, carry out the following steps:
Click the 'Office button'.
Click the 'Word Options' button.
Click the 'Proofing' option from the left panel of the 'Word Options' dialog box.
Uncheck the 'Ignore Words in UPPERCASE' option.
Click 'OK' to save changes.
However, if this is not the problem and the spell checker is ignoring entire paragraphs, check if proofing options have been disabled for the paragraph.
Select the required paragraph.
Go to 'Tools / Language / Set Language'.
Uncheck the 'Do Not Check Spelling or Grammar' option from the 'Language' dialog box.
Click 'OK' to save changes.
Carry out the following steps if you are using Word 2007 instead: Select the required paragraph.
Go to the 'Review' tab.
Click the 'Set Language' button appearing under the 'Proofing' group of the tab.
Uncheck the 'Do Not Check Spelling or Grammar' option from the 'Language' dialog box.
Click 'OK' to save changes.
