This can be done by Character Palette. Mac OS X, many special characters are hiding in variety of characters. In System Preferences, go to International category, then in Input Menu tab. If it is not there, check Character Palette in list, and Show input menu in menu bar of window. Now you can add characters in documents.
If you unable to access Character Palette after activating then go to System Preferences, then International, go to Input Menu and reactivate service again. Select Show Character Palette in settings. It is floating palette having all Unicode characters, successor to ASCII. Unicode has 65,536 as ASCII table contained only 256.
In Character Palette you obtain a variety of special characters in categories such as math, arrows, brackets, crosses, stars, accented characters, after character chosen, show it in specific font. But generally add it by clicking button, or small drag to system.
Palette can be included with any application. Just require to set function for input device. It is simply accessible. This palette is handy than old application Keys to find specific character.
