This month the pcw Labs has got its hands on a newbie from ATI's 4000 series -the XFX HD 4650 (1GB). The HD 4650 attempts to bridge the gap between the HD 4550 and the HD 4670.

As is XFX's tradition, the HD 4650 looks swanky and the heat sink and fan attached to it work very well. The card remains silent and cool throughout. It has two DVI ports, a Video-out port and comes with a DVI to VGA adapter. The talking point of the card is the 1GB of GDDR3 memory that it comes with.

We weren't expecting much in terms of performance from the card. In 3D mark '06, the HD 4650 scored 5,277, almost 3,000 marks away from the HD 4670. Again in 3D Mark Vantage, with a score of 2,316, the performance was almost halved as compared to the HD 4670.

It performed subpar in Crysis with 17 fps at 1280x1024 with no AA and settings at HighFar Cry 2 produced better results with 30 fps at the same resolution and settings.
