After AMD with the ATI Radeon HD 5000 family a few months on the market and rival Nvidia represented just with the cards based on GeForce GTX 460 and GTX 465 is in a good position, one presented recently before the next generation desktop graphics cards. This is heard by the Radeon HD 6000-series, whose first two members to the names Radeon HD 6850 and HD 6870th Similar to the naming scheme of the 5000 generation, it is also this to graphics chips from the mid-range.

Like the previous generations of GPUs, the new graphics chips from Barts in a TSMC 40 nm process are made. For the calculation of complex 3D images are the chips of the Radeon HD 6000 family 224 (HD 6870) and 192 (HD 6850) 5-dimensional shader units. The frequencies are 900 and 775 MHz respectively with exactly 50 MHz above the values of the HD 5000 models. Compared with the models of Radeon HD 5850 and HD 5870, the number of shaders, however, reduced (320 and 288), which explains the lower total computing power of 2016 or 1488 GFLOP / sec. How the resultant on the performance in our benchmarks effect, we will clarify in detail on the following pages. found in the table below, all the important technical details on the two first models of the Radeon HD 6000 family, compared with Nvidia's GeForce GTX 460, its direct competitor.

The HD 6000 series has a built-in hardware UVD (Unified Video Decoder 3rd generation), which reduces the CPU load significantly and smooth decoding of Blu-ray and HD DVD content for both codes to enable VC-1 and H.264 and MPEG files. A new addition is the support for multiple video coding for Blu-ray 3D. Dolby TrueHD, DTS-HD Master Audio and HDMI 1.4a are also supported. Thus, the user can now enjoy Digital Theater applications in even higher resolutions, support for stereoscopic 3D displays, as well as 7.1 audio. The HD 6870 from Sapphire has two DVI, one HDMI and two mini Display Port connectors.
