For more than three months, Nvidia has high-end graphics chip G70 aka GeForce 7800GTX unchallenged monopoly on the performance crown in the 3D accelerator desktop PCs for themselves now, even laptops will soon be accelerated with the same technology through the virtual space of the 3D games. The GeForce Go 7800 is now officially launched first manufacturer to offer that laptops with this graphics chip will include ABS, Alienware, Dell, Falcon Northwest, Hypersonic, Sager and Voodoo PC.

In fact, the GeForce Go 7800 GTX is based on the G70 the technical features are identical, we therefore refer to this point in our previous article on the GeForce 7800 GTX .

The only real difference from the GeForce 7800 GTX is reduced to 30 MHz max clock and the accompanying recommendation to 550 MHz memory speed over 600 MHz.

The consequent loss of performance is compared to the Go to your desktop derivative mathematically just seven percent the performance of the Go 7800GTX is still so much on a real 6800 Ultra to settle, which is endowed with the same clock speeds, but only 16 compared with 24 pixel pipes.

When you think of the approximately 80 Watts power dissipation of a normal 7800, the question immediately arises, of course, as in a laptop is at all possible here, the small but important changes in this regard the chip appear. The Go 7800 has sophisticated power-saving technologies these range from well-known clock throttling and variable core voltage to be switched off completely units of the chip and reduce the PCI Express link.

The control of the dynamic core voltage determined always the lowest possible supply voltage of the chip that are needed at a given clock and temperature the clock in 2D mode this can be up to 16 MHz throttled down, whereas desktop card always run at least half the clock. As in the pure 2D mode and a 16x PCI Express interface too much of a good would be forced in the power-saving mode 1x special features such as TV-out will be disabled if not used completely.
