If you are using Microsoft Windows 98, ME, 2000, XP and Vista in the computer.
For this you have to run the Disk Cleanup option on computer.
    1. First open My Computer.
    2. After opening of My Computer, then Right click on the hard disk any one which you want to regain the hard disk drive space. For e.g. right click at Drive C.
    3. When right clicked then click at Properties from the option available.
    4. Properties option will show the General tab, click at the "Disk Cleanup" button which is placed next to the pie chart.
    5. Then windows will start scanning your computer making all the files available for clean up.
    6. Once the Disk Cleanup window is been scanned then each of the boxes that are taking disk space and click Ok and then Yes if you wish to move further.

If you are running Windows 2000 and Windows XP in the computer:
Window 2000 and Windows XP will keep all the important files which are wanted for uninstalling any of the updates ever when they are been installed in your computer. Frequently this is a numerous dozen of updates that can take up quite a few hundred and at times it takes over 1 gig of space on your hard disk drive.
Try to disable the System Restore by reducing and utilizing the space and some extra gigabytes of hard disk drive space. Follow the below given steps in order to customize this feature.
    1. Click Start, Programs, Accessories, System Tools, and open "System Restore".
    2. When System Restore window is open there will be an option and click at the "System Restore Settings".
    3. In "System Restore" option there is also another option like tab where you can either check the "Turn off System Restore on all drives" making it entirely immobilize this feature, or else click at the Settings button and decline the space usage, which we would urge.
You can also disable the hibernation by turning the computer off and using the hibernation mode from where you can stop this feature to free up a lot of disk space.

If you are using Microsoft Windows 95 for recovery of computer hard disk space by doing any or all of the below steps.
Clean up the temporary files from your computer
    1. Click Start and then Search or Find
    2. In the "File Type" text field type: *.tmp and verify the computer is looking at the C: drive or the drive that will contain your operating system.
    3. Search for files and delete every of the temporary files which are been found.
Also delete the chk files from the computer
Carry out the same steps as number one excluding the search for *.chk and delete any of the files that are found.
