Hard disk capacities keep shooting up with no end in sight yet. A new HDD with a capacity of 500 GB (half a terabyte 1). The problem that follows, is of keeping track of all the data that ends up being collected. As the old saying goes, "data expands to fill the space available". Moreover, it isn't sufficient to just leave the data on the PC's hard disk - failure of the hard disk is always a very real possibility regardless of the HDD's age. After a disk-failure, it is quite difficult to separate the fluff (movies, songs) from the essential (documents that you created, which are irreplaceable) .
Therefore, backing up your data cannot be dispensed with. You can backup to an external hard disk, blank CDs/DVDs, flash drives, or just about any other media that isn't connected to your PC all the time. However, if you choose to move data out of your HDD onto other media (such as DVD-Rs), accessing it again is not as quick anymore.
That for many people, is a major reason for retaining data on the HDD itself. That issue is solved by using cataloguing software such as Advanced File Organizer (AFO). AFO is a powerful and easy-to-use software that helps organize a disc collection. No more having to insert disc after disc and scanning through their folders to find out which one has the files you want. Once you have indexed every disc and partition that you want, you can search through them all within seconds. AFO has a tree-style two-pane interface (like Windows Explorer) through which you can simply browse through a collection of discs. The trial version allows for five discs to be indexed.
