Thread: Missing hard disk space

Some time ago my computer stopped working. Trying to reinstall Windows XP was no good because the disc would not load. My hard disk is a Seagate 200GB model and when I tried moving a jumper on it I was able to load the Windows CD. However, I'm now restricted to only 32GB of the 200GB on the disk. Can this be fixed or is the largest part of my drive gone?

Older versions of Windows have a size limit of 32GB of any hard disk, and some hard disks used ajumper on the back of the unit to switch this mode on. It sounds like when you changed the jumper settings, you may have accidentally set it to show as only 32GB. You can find details on how to change it back on Seagate's website - check the technical support section and locate the documentation for your hard disk .

If that's not the case, remember that Windows still has a limit of 32GB per disk if you are using the Fat 32 filing system. Larger disks will need to be formatted using the NTFS filing system if you want to use their full capacities.
