The growing popularity of multimedia has successfully created an artificial desire for disk space among users. Once an USB drive with 2-4GB of space was enough for anybody but now everybody loves to carry around all of their professional and personal data on the go. And that is why every manufacturer has started wresting with each other on the space battleground. Unfortunately the footprint of the disk increases proportionately with the increasing amount of space. Western Digital alias WD has just released an external HDD with 500GB of . space, which can be easily slipped into your hip pocket.

The WD My Passport is successful enough to keep the footprint almost similar to a real passport. With an aluminium luster and a smudge free body, My Passport Elite 500GB looks similar to other My Passport drives.

The USB mini port is concealed under a slide which needs to be opened before connecting. There are a series of moonlight LCD's that glow when the drive is in use. Bundled with the drive we found a data cable and instruction manual. Unfortunately the software CD isn't supplied; you've to download it online.

The supplied cable is a bit short and may cause problems for older PCs that have no built-in USB ports at the front. The software has both Mac and Windows versions and is very easy to use. It backs up all the data and mails (Outlook) in a jiffy. On the performance front the drive came out with flying colours. We copied a folder consisting of 13 sub folders, 66 images, 3 video files and 24 audio files with a bulk size of I GB. And, it just took around fifty seconds to complete the task.

While pasting the same folder it took one minute and ten seconds of time which is not bad either. For an external USB hard drive My Passport Elite proves to be a champion in terms of performance. Considering the price-to-performance ratio My Passport Elite is a good device and worth your hard earned money.
