The new Barracuda LP series hard drives from Seagate is designed and built with a primary focus on speed and low power consumption. Unlike their conventional Green drive line-up that operates at 5400 RPM, the new LP series offers better transfer speeds with a slightly higher spindle speed of 5900 RPM. So going green doesn't necessarily mean "slow" since the Barracuda LP series provides acceptable performance while lowering power consumption. The drives also come with a whopping 32 MB of cache that add to the overall performance.
With a sequential read and write speed of 108 MB/s and 105 MB/s the Seagate Barracuda LP is as fast as most 7200 RPM drives. Also, the time taken to read and write a 1 GB file averages at under 15 seconds, which is fast considering that this is a low power drive.
