An external HD is a storage device that operates independently from your PC. You can copy files placed on your PC’s HD to an external HD to back them up.
1. Connections
An external HD gets power from a cord that connects to an electrical outlet. A USB cable connects from the port on the back of the unit to a port on a laptop or desktop computer.
2. Storage
Normally, an external HD includes many times more file storage space than what a personal computer offers. For example, if your PC has a 10 GB hard drive, the external drive may be 160, 320 or 500 GB or more.
3. Quick Connect
Once attached, many external HD allow you to drag and drop files using the same methods you would use to copy files to a CD or DVD.
4. Low Cost
Prices for an external HD range from $80 to $800, depending on storage space and other features.
5. Tips
Seagate, LaCie, Iomega, Verbatim and Apricorn are among the companies manufacturing external hard drives.
