These are some simple steps to having new hard disk up and running.

Instructions

Step 1

Turn off PC and disconnect unit entirely. Few people disconnect all peripherals, few people do not.

Step 2

Open PC case. Every case is a bit different, but has many things in common also. The good thing to do is to check for screws, and remove any screws that look to be for case. Many cases open by bigger panel on either side.

Step 3

After case is open, inner workings are uncovered and hard drive there in its rack.

Step 4

Ensure that you can see which kind of hard drive you are including, either ATA or SATA. Serial ATA or SATA have different plug and power supply then ATA, which is small white plug and ribbon cable.

Step 5

Connect hard dive before you put it in rack. Ensure you have on anti-static wrist strap, so fixed electricity doesn’t damage drive before you even save first file. Ensure hard drive is set to master. A tiny jumper at back must be withering in middle position of left position.

Step 6

Connect hard drive to mother board, in slot adjacent to where main hard drive is connected. This is IDE Controller slot and makes hard drive master of channel 1; channel 0 is main hard drive. The ribbon cable has plug with formed end that fit particularly into hole in plug on motherboard. Do not push anything hard that will damage motherboard. All plugs go in smooth and tight.

Step 7

Glide hard drive into rack above or below central hard dive.

Step 8

Change all items as laid out in steps 1 and 2, and connect in PC. When you boot up system you must notice hard drive in My Computer window. Based on how many other drives you have like CD or DVD ROM, hard drive will have letter like E or F.
