Hard disk is a device that records digitally encoded data on fast rotating platters with magnetic surfaces. Any corruption of read-write heads or platters can cause disk failure. There is no way to avoid hard drive from finally failing, but there are few things that can perform to slow down process.

Instructions

• Backup to make sure that data is protected, saving amount of time in event of tragedy, user error, hardware failure or other problems. Check restores to be sure backups are functioning appropriately.

• Ensure that PC is on stable desk to prevent needless vibration. Heat can cause electronics of hard drive to fail so correctly ventilate PC. Prevent placing PC on carpet, which can make static electricity resulting in hard drive failures. Purchase surge protector or standard power strip to protect PC from power surges.

• Identify some warning signals in drive failure like vanishing files. Drive usually fails over time rather than suddenly. Files start to vanish and this problem will continue and become more common until hard drive fails totally.

• Focus on to any reoccurring error messages as moving, copying, deleting or making data, files or folders.

• Listen for loud, low, uneven, clicking, or grinding sound from hard drive particularly when attempting to recover files.
