When you buy a new computer, there is chance to lose data from your hard disk. You can easily recover data from your old system by doing a "swap" of you old HDD onto your new system. Swapping HDD can be as simple as just taking one out and putting it in another computer.

    Assessments to Make Before Swapping
If you actually plan on swapping HDD between systems, consider some things before starting. Open up your old computer's case. Do the same with your new computer's case. As you look inside of both, take notice of how the HDD connect to the motherboard. Does your old hard drive attach to the motherboard through a flat and wide cable--an IDE cable--or a slim cable--an SATA cable? Ensure the new computer's HDD has the same type of cable attached to it as the old systems drive.

If the HDD do not have the same type of motherboard connection, try to find a connector on the new systems motherboard matching the shape of the one that connects to your old hard drive. You can perhaps save the old HDD cable and connect it to its new home if you find a matching connector on the new motherboard. If you cannot save the HDD in any way, get an external hard drive field so that you can still use your old HDD as an external one through USB or FireWire.

    Performing the Swap
If you consider any anxiety with operating on your computer's interior, get a professional to help and point out what you need to do. Never touch the interior of a computer without knowing at least the basic concepts about the subtle electronics.

Before you start, cut off all power cables from your PC. Take the HDD out slowly and unplug the power cable by shifting it left and right periodically while pulling back. Unplug the cable that connects to the motherboard while you remove the HDD.

When both HDD are out, attach them in the acceptable PC ensure to connect all the plugs you detached from the other HDD.
