Thread: Hard Disk Storage

I have 2.5" & 3.5" hard disks that I want to store lasting basis. I have read many spaces that 'stacking' them isn’t good due to magnetic prob. I was wondering if they were stored in static confirmation bags would it matter if stacked one on top of other. I don’t indicate stacking them in the comp, not worried about them heating due to low face space, trying to find out best way to store them long-term.

Static bags have no decide on magnetic fields. It would, however, be a good idea to keep them in static bags to protect them from, well you know--static. Hard drives do have magnets in them I suppose it’s possible magnets in one drive could affect the subjects of another drive. In pc with more than one hard drive, they're often mounted one on top of the other with very little clearance between them so I don't think it's a big problem. I have dozens of drives I'm not using piled on top of each other and haven't noticed.

Problems should I pull one out to use in a PC. But some breakup couldn't hurt. You could probably store them separated by an inch or two and be safe. Another thing, the placement and shape of the magnets will give a non-uniform magnetic field. I am guessing, but it may be safer stacking them on top of one another--with some separation--than if they were close together in a different configuration.
