Default How to detect hard disk error rate

First acknowledge the help and suggestions from users. My problem is with a Barracuda HDD 80 GB where he had stored large amounts of information. The hard drive in question appears in the bios, there are times it takes to admit, I have to go several times in the ide devices, but then Windows XP does not detect it.
I tried also with a cdlive and nothing appeared on my pc either.

I also tried on another computer where it was not able to get Windows starts up, therefore there was this (not work) as a slave. I took him to the store and then test it with a program with an interface like the bios told me he had to take it to a data recovery company because it had a short circuit that prevented the input and output data. He said with an approximate cost of 900 Eur -

That is why I would appreciate your opinions on how to know exactly what type of problem: logical, physical, if I can make myself some kind of test with software etc. I remember that Windows does not recognize the disc does not appear.

It is possible that the problem is logical that derives from the logic board, If you were told that it must be true You have no choice but to take it to a recovery company if you want to salvage your files.

In any case, whatever the fault is recorded and no test can repair such anomalies.
