Citing a require to “align to recent Industry standards”, Seagate has declared it proposes to dilute warranty times on its hard drives, coping with a move done through competitor Western Digital.


Consorting to The Register, which first broke the story, Seagate’s warranties will be diluted as of December 31, while Western Digital will comply suit on January 2. Entire drives shipped prior to those respective dates will even carry the similar warranty as early.


Seagate’s fresh warranty policy used to hard drives shipped in desktops and user electronics machines. Seagate says there will be no alter in warranty policy on “mission critical enterprise drives.”

Western Digital will proceed to keep their policy of a 5-year warranty on its “premium desktop/notebook products, adding the WD Caviar Black, WD Scorpio Black and WD VelociRaptor products,” consorting to a company spokesperson.


Together companies deny that this alter in warranty policy is associated to floods in Thailand which have induced a deficit in drives.


“By adjusting to recent industry standards, Seagate can go forward to concentrate its investments on tech innovation and unique product characteristic that drive value for our users,” the company claims.


In an email to clients declaring the alter in policy, Western Digital said: “In the near next we will be unveiling an covered warranty extending with particular costing.”
