I imagine that I can assist you out here, you can just connect the outer hard drive to your mac/computer and then you can only copy the films to iTunes and then just keep it functioning with the leaving the itunes open, only test it out and then let me familiar if you have any doubts with the similar.

You would not be capable to stream it exactly but then you can test out the other way as well and it is by including the content to iTunes with Home Sharing, you can say this as an alternate trick as well.
