BIOS (Basic Input Output System) - A set of orders stored on a ROM chip that provide an interface for a computer's hardware and software.
CD Burner - A kind of CD-ROM device that can burn/write information and music onto writable CDs.
CD-ROM (Compact Disc Read-Only Memory) - An optical information storage medium using disks similar to audio CDs. CD-ROMs have a minimum storage capacity of 700 MB (megabytes). Some types can be written to multiple times (CD-RW). CD-ROMs are used in CD-ROM players on pc.
CPU (central processing unit) - Also recognized as the processor. This microchip controls and perform the execution of pc instructions. They come in many different type and speeds. The speed is most normally measured in gigahertz (GHz).
Firewire - A very quick external bus that supports information transfer rates of up to 400 Mbps. It is used to join devices to computer that require a high information transfer rate such as video cameras.
Hard Drive - A gadget inside (sometimes outside) of a pc used to store information such as files, folder, documents and pictures etc. They come in a lot of similar capacities and are usually measured in gigabytes. They also come with different interfaces to the pc such as IDE, SATA and SCSI.
Heatsink - A cool gadget which attach to a CPU to perform away and disperse the heat generated by the CPU.
Jumper - A little part of place over pairs of pins to join them electronically most normally used on hard drive and CD-ROMS to choose which is master and which the slave is.
Motherboard - The key circuit board of a pc system. It contains the system bus. It has similar links for the CPU, memory, expansion cards, hard drives etc. All the system devices run though the motherboard.
Network Interface Card (NIC) - A hardware gadget is used to connect a pc to other networked plans such as other pc and printers. NICs can hold several different information transfer rates but the most general is 100 Mbps (mega bits per second).
PCI (peripheral computer interconnect) - an industry-standard bus use in pc that provide a high-speed link with peripherals such as video and sound cards.
PCI Express - A high-speed peripheral connect introduced in 2002 that expands on
and double the information transfer rates of unusual PCI. PCI Express is a 2 way serial link compared to the single parallel data bus of traditional PCI. It was planned to eventually replace the PCI and AGP buses.
Power Supply - The part that supplies power to the pc and convert AC current to DC current. It has special power plugs that fit your hardware plans such as hard drives, CDROM, and motherboard.
RAID (redundant array of independent disks or redundant array of inexpensive disks ) - A scheme whereby several hard drive are related jointly to form a single large drive for storage that offers increased presentation and fault tolerance.
RAM (random access memory) - The very quick brief of a pc into which function program currently in use can be loaded and executed. Once the pc is turned off, all information in this memory is lost.
SCSI (Small Computer System Interface) A different kind of interface among a pc and peripherals that allow faster communication than most other interface standards. SCSI provides a very fast information transfer rate and can join up to 7 devices together.
Sound Card - An interface is a card that is use to transfer for the audio signal involving to the pc and the speakers.
USB (Universal Serial Bus) - A different type is used to connect for the devices such as keyboards, mice, cameras, printers, scanners etc to a pc. Most new pc have 4 or additional USB ports installed. You will have up to 127 devices attach though these ports.
Video Card - An interface is a card that is used to transfer the video signal between one computer and the monitor.
