USB and Firewire ports replaced the serial port, a hardware port on earlier PCs, in the early 2000s. As you get serial port PCI cards that can install within motherboard, attaching serial port to USB simplifies handling of old joysticks, mice, networking hardware and other devices. To attach a serial device to a USB port, you want to buy a USB-to-serial adapter, which you can find at PC hardware vendors.
Instructions
1. Step 1
Arrange in line serial device's connector with adapter. One row has five pins or holes and the other has four. The pins must fit in the holes accurately.
2. Step 2
ut in the serial device's connector to USB-to-serial adapter's connector.
3. Step 3
Put in USB connector with an accessible port on PC or USB hub.
4. Step 4
Authorize Windows a while to "Detect new hardware." Put in driver disk when request by Windows, and allow Windows to automatically search for driver.
5. Step 5
Click on "Next" when Windows locates the driver for operating system. Click on "Finish" or "Close" after Windows installs driver.
