There are some cases when a hard drive looks to partition itself. The cause of this visible self partitioning is reinstallation software installed by OEM PC companies like Compaq or Dell that sets aside a portion of a hard drive for future system restores. This problem can simply be solved in operating system with little technical knowledge by PC user.

Preparation

1. Before removing this restoration partition it is essential to ensure you have appropriately backed up critical system data. Many OEM PCs do not come with operating system installation discs and this is reason the restoration partition is made during a system restore. Make sure that have an operating system installation disc and installation files for all relevant applications that came with PC. Not performing this work result in incapability to restore operating system or programs at a later date.

Assessing the Excess Partition

2. The excess partition made is generally only some gigabytes in size. If you are particular of your requirement for this drive space, it is highly suggested that just leave the partition by yourself. To determine the size of partition and its significance to capacity requirements, just enter term "Computer Management" into Windows search box in "Start Menu." Click icon that is returned in results and then left tick "Disk Management" then go to results. This lists all drives and their partitions. Find drive the secondary partition is on and review its size.

Recovering the Partition

3. Right click partition you want to remove and recover. Choose "Delete Volume"
heading below context menu which shows. This removes partition permanently and lost all data connected to this partition. Now you should expand partition you want to maintain by just right clicking that partition and choosing "Extend Partition" in context menu that results. A dialog box will show asking how much of newly unpartitioned space you want to extend this partition by. The default is set to expand it to include the whole remaining space obtainable on disc. Just click "OK" button and partition will be expanded to include whole drive space and leave with one partition. This will prevent opportunity of hard drive partitioning itself in future also, assuming you do not utilize an OEM supplied restoration disc in future to restore system.
