The booting process for a Gateway PC is usually flawless: After you turn on PC, you can sit back as PC reads hard drive and starts operating system. Though, occasionally it's needed to boot first from a CD-ROM disc, particularly when you are solving or installing a new operating system. Setting up Gateway PC to boot from CD-ROM is a simple process, but need you to enter system BIOS, which saves the settings associated to operation of PC hardware.

Instructions

1. Step 1

Confirm that CD-ROM disc is bootable. Operating system discs are bootable. Put disc into drive and restart PC.

2. Step 2

Push any F1 or F2 key each second when boot screen displays to enter BIOS menu.
BIOS access key varies depending on type of BIOS installed in PC, but all Gateway desktops utilize either F1 or F2. If Windows load screen appears, restart and attempt again.

3. Step 3

Find the boot priority setting below Boot Options in BIOS menu. Arrow keys are used to go to menu and hit "Enter" to pick. If you get lost in options, press "Esc" to return to main menu.

4. Step 4

Below Boot Options, choose First Boot Device and hit "Enter." Choose CD-ROM option and push "Enter" again. You can also modify order of boot devices to contain FLOPPY, HARD DISK or NETWORK. Hit "Esc" to return to main menu.

5. Step 5

Push F10 key to save settings to BIOS and exit. PC will now restart and read from CD-ROM before it tries to access other boot devices.
