How to Find Out Why Your Computer Runs Slow
Earlier than choosing to do anything about slow running PC, find out causes why it is running slow. There are some methods to detect why PC is running slow.
Here are some of the steps you can take to analyze PC.
Instructions
1. Right-click on “My Computer” then selects "Properties" and check specifications. If PC’s specification is less than 1.5GHz processor with less than 1GB or memory (RAM), then you must know that PC is not created for processor intensive applications like video editing or other software that needs higher specification. The general solution to develop performance is to add physical memory or RAM.
2. Go to “Start” and tick “Run” to open a command prompt. Type in “msconfig” and press enter. From “System Configuration” window, tick “Startup” tab and you will get list of programs that runs when PC boots. This instantly occupies space on memory so if you have small memory capacity, PC will run slow. You think about uninstalling other programs that do not use or disable some programs from startup.
3. Run Disk Cleanup to notice how much space you can free up on hard disk by removing temporary internet files, downloaded programs, unutilized Windows parts, or even unutilized programs. It is important to repeatedly clean up temporary internet files as this slows down internet access afterward.
4. Step 4
Execute Disk Defragmenter to notice if hard disk is poorly fragmented. When you remove or transfer big files to hard disk, form fragments of files which can cause access to hard disk become slowly. Your processor utilizes hard disk space for virtual memory and if hard disk is poorly fragmented, it slows down PC performance.
5. Step 5
Launch anti-virus or anti-spyware program to notice if there are defective programs installed on PC without identifying. This spyware and viruses can slow down PC. Though, if you are using security software like Norton Antivirus, you must know that it utilize more resources than other software. You must think adding more RAM or switch to a different safety software.
6. Step 6
Listen to PC if you can hear fan working. For desktop PCs, you can take out cover to see if CPU fan is working correctly. If not, it absolutely affects the performance of PC as processor might overheat. Think about changing CPU fan or give extra fan for cooling. Laptops have coolers that helps dissolve heat from laptop PCs.
