Laptop memory functions like normal desktop memory, but it is smaller and fits in a tiny, thin laptop. RAM is installed in PCs as a volatile storage device. This device is one that loses data when power is off. RAM is quicker than other storage devices such as hard drives, thus more memory a laptop has, quicker the performance. Laptop memory is particular to laptop motherboard, but all memory modules work equally.
Significance
1. Most laptops are built with only 1GB of RAM installed on machine. 1GB of RAM is enough for applications, but when users install higher applications or utilize more of laptop resources, machine becomes slow and software performances irregularly. Including more laptop memory develops performance. As more RAM is available for more data, PC is not forced to save information to hard drive, which is a slower form of memory known as "virtual memory."
Function
2. Laptop RAM works as a storage unit. When PC boots, hardware part tested by boot process is memory. Without RAM, PC wants to utilize hard drive for any information that requires being available as using an application. RAM is a fast hardware module that loads information whilst using an application and sends it to CPU, which processes it for user. Though, after PC is turned off, information is lost, which is why RAM is considered volatile.
Identification
3. Laptop memory looks like normal memory modules for desktops. Memory has long, rectangular circuit boards. On the bottom are metal contacts that are put in to motherboard. The bottom of memory has one or two notches. DDR SDRAM has two notches, which is general memory type. SDRAM has only one notch. This difference is vital, since it decides the type of RAM that requires to be bought to upgrade laptop.
Misconceptions
4. When upgrading laptop memory, the first consideration that most people have is that PC will be significantly quicker. RAM develops performance by raising data that is swapped by applications installed on PC. Though, it does not alternate for a fast processor or best video card. RAM works in combination with other hardware parts in machine to develop performance, but it is one of many causes why a machine is slow through processing.
Warning
5. If user does not know how to install memory in a laptop, it's best to ask a PC technician to install new memory. Installing the incorrect memory or installing it wrongly can make the machine unfeasible. Also, opening a laptop may cancel a warranty, so check with Laptop Company before opening the machine.
