Ethernet is well known cable for networking, surpassing earlier cabling technologies. Of standards in Ethernet cabling, Cat 5e stays amongst broadly utilized. Sadly, a reliable signal can be carried over Ethernet only a fairly short distance: 100 meters, or about 328 feet. Most times a home owner or office dweller finds it required to expand Cat 5 cabling further than current installations. Luckily, this is a quite easy process with appropriate tools.

Instructions

1. Step 1

Connect any one from 5-port switches into an electrical outlet near terminus of an
Ethernet cable near to its limit of 100 meters, or 328 feet. Put in end of cable into first port on switch.

2. Step 2

Put in an extra long cable into other port on switch. The switch will then perform as a cheap relay, and will increase Ethernet signal so that it can expand further than 100 meter limit. Precisely, if you utilize another 100-meter cable, you have just doubled the range of signal.

3. Step 3

Take second switch into a room where extension of the number of ports is preferred.

4. Step 4

Connect electric cable for switch into a hole. Connect a patch cable into an Ethernet wall port in room. Patch cables are short lengths of Ethernet cord with two male ends.

5. Step 5

Connect remaining end of patch cable into first port on 5-port Ethernet switch. Make sure every connection is safe.

6. Step 6

Use the four extra ports on switch for extending Cat 5 cabling in room. Check connection with a laptop. You have successfully expanded one port into four by way of switch.
