How to Replace Powerbook Internal Backup Battery

Macintosh PowerBook features an internal battery backup known as PRAM battery. This battery maintains important information about OS in memory even when battery powering notebook has run out of power. Changing PRAM battery when it has become exhausted of power is needed to carry on using Powerbook successfully. The process differs a bit, but generally it is same between various models. Changing battery needs some handiness but can be done in an hour or two by just about anybody.

Instructions

1. Step 1

Place clean cloth down on a work surface. Put Powerbook down on clean cloth. Eliminate keyboard locks by pulling down two tabs of keyboard and using screwdriver on tiny screw between two tabs.

Raise the keyboard up watchfully and put it aside without disturbing wires attached to it.

Take out power plug directly. Make use of screwdriver to free processor. Drag processor board up and out of Powerbook and place it to the side.

Take out RAM memory. Place the reminiscence to the side.

2. Step 2

Press the screwdriver under clutch cover and pull it up and out. Place it to the side. Turn Powerbook so that back is facing you. Take out four screws with Torx screwdriver. Place screws to the side. Turn the Powerbook back so that the front is facing you.

3. Step 3

Work out information cable from inside of Powerbook and take out power cable associated near.

Raise the display up and off and put it to the side.

4. Step 4

Take out screws nearby PMU cable with screwdriver. Put screws to the side. Take out PMU cable. Twist Powerbook up and down and take out screws using Torx screwdriver.

5. Step 5

Take top part off beginning from back and evading cable that is running around it before turn Powerbook back right side up. Put the top part to the side. Twist the sound card and pull it up and to right to eliminate it. Put it aside.

Free the metal levers and eliminate power/charge card combination section. Put it aside.

6. Step 6

Take out board and PC card cage using screwdriver. Place it sideways.

7. Step 7

Interfere PRAM battery loose from PMU board. Throw it away. Place a new PRAM battery into place on contacts of PMU board. Seat the PRAM battery into place.

8. Step 8

Rebuild Powerbook by reversing process utilized to disassemble it.

Connect battery charger to Powerbook so that PRAM battery can get completely charge.

9. Step 9

Wait for two hours and then turn on and utilize the Powerbook.
