1. Step 1

Average document size that people in US scan is 8.5 x 11 inches. Obtain a picture frame bigger than 8.5 x 11 with glass and remove glass. The glass will be utilized to level the document.

Install digital camera on tripod and slant camera so that it takes a picture straight down. The other method is to aim camera to a vertical surface like a wall.

3. Step 3

With flat document, place camera thus it takes a picture of document on a flat surface.

Ensure that background of document is white. If you have a 8.5 x 11" document, place a white paper or poster board beyond 8.5 x 11 flat and then place the document and then include glass.

Make sure that lighting does not cast a shadow on document. Utilize a desk, table lamp, or any secure lighting source to defuse the shadow. There must be even lighting throughout the document.

Capture one or more test pictures. If you are digitizing a text document, load picture of text document in PC and confirm that text is clear and reproducible. Preferably, text is black on a white document. If picture has a background that is grey or a dark off white color, the lighting requires brighter.

9. Step 9

After system to take pictures of documents that turn out to have quality you want, you can carry on to make copies of other documents.

10. Step 10

After you scanned documents, move the photos in PC. You can do this by using cable that came with digital camera. If PC has a media reader that takes memory cards, take memory out of camera and put in proper media slot to move photos from card to PC.

11. Step 11

You can move photos to PC and rename files of document images to anything unique. You can also copy whole contents of camera on hard drive and rename photos afterward. Many digital cameras give a date as a filename for picture and this may be good enough.
