US Robotics' two editions of 5660 modem the 5660a and 5660c are both friendly with Windows 95, 98, ME, 2000 and XP. There are no drivers, though, for Linux or for Vista and Windows 7. For modem to completely function ISPs should support V.92 aspects and user should install needed software. Lastly 5660 model can face connection problems and hardware failure.

System Requirements

1. PCs should meet minimum system requirements to utilize US Robotics 5660 modem. PC should have friendly OS; have at least a 500-MHz CPU and 128 MB of system memory. As USRobotics 5660a and 5660c models are either “softmodems” or "Winmodems," they based on system resources to create and maintain connections. PCs that do not meet these necessities or that barely meet them may face connection problems.

Conflicts with Other Modems

2. Users with PCs that have other modem already installed must be ready to remove extraneous modem from Windows Device Manager and from motherboard, if possible. On-board modems disabled in its place. Having above one modem enabled in Windows can cause hardware compatibility problems when installing or using USRobotics 5660 Modem.

Connection Problems

3. USRobotics 5660 modem report "no dial tone." This error can be caused by phone line problems or phone jack or by odd phone lines, like business lines. If dialing from an office, hotel or other place that needs dialing "9" to reach an outside line, users must contain "9" followed by at least one comma. Every comma putted into phone number will delay dialing by two seconds.

Users with odd dial tones want to add "X3" command in "Extra Settings" tab to solve "no-dial-tone" error yourself.

Modem-On-Hold Problems

4. USRobotics 5660 modem contains support for modem-on-hold (MOH) technology. MOH interrupts a dial up connection, alerts user to an incoming call and permits user to either accept or ignore call. Below optimal conditions, MOH aspect will hold a data connection as user takes voice call.

ISP should support MOH protocol for this aspect to work. User's telephone line should also have call-waiting aspect for this technology to work. If user has Caller ID, this data also shown. See V.92 ISP list to confirm that ISP supports this feature.

User should install Internet Call Notification software given by USRobotics. Users must make sure that they have new version of software to minimize software conflicts.

Hardware Failure

5. Though USRobotics intended 5660 Modem to survive electric shocks up to 3,000 volts, company does not cover hardware that fails because of lightning or surges. Users must disconnect their modems during thunderstorms or when not attaching to Internet. Users also think about buying and attaching modem to a lightning and surge protector to avoid terrible hardware failure.
