Device drivers are vital to appropriate operation of PC, however many users never cooperate with majority of them. A device driver is a set of commands utilized by PC to control hardware that is installed, and each part of hardware has a driver linked with it. Check device drivers for IDE controllers if you are facing performance or dependability problems with PC hard drive after new change or upgrade.

Step 1

Go to Windows Update website to decide whether there are new Microsoft permitted drivers available for IDE controllers. This website is only friendly with IE browser. Download any obtainable updates. They will be installed mechanically. If you are still facing problem with IDE drivers, go on to Step 2.

Step 2

Go to "Start" then "Control Panel." Double tick "Device Manager".

Step 3

Go through list until you get "IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers," and click plus sign. This will tell you manufacturer of IDE controller. Intel, VIA and NVIDIA are three common names to observe here.

Step 4

Scroll down to "System Devices," and tick plus sign. You must locate more entries here with similar company name as that of IDE controller, along with a name or number showing motherboard chipset. Few examples contain "Intel 82801," "NVIDIA nForce 9" and "VIA VT8251." If you do not see any names or numbers to help you recognize motherboard’s chipset, the data can be found in manual for motherboard or PC.

Step 5

Go to website of motherboard Chipset Company. Utilize information that collected in earlier steps to find new IDE controller drivers for motherboard. In many cases, these drivers will be packaged with all other drivers for motherboard. There is no damage in installing all drivers immediately. Double click downloaded driver file, and it will be installed mechanically. Upon restarting PC, IDE controller drivers will be updated.
