Default I'm unable to run C++ compilers and environments.

I, recently upgraded my Acer system seven to eight months ago. It has an Intel Core 2 Duo processor, 2 GB DDR 2 RAM, and 320 GB hard drive. It was working fine for the last seven months, but all of a sudden it starts giving "Generic Host Controller" errors while surfing. Using the DOS window, Windows closes in just five to six seconds. I can't run C++ compilers and environments.

To overcome this problem, I formatted my C drive and installed a licenced version of Windows XP and also activated it. On the second day, the same problem occurred. So, I tried enabling system restore, but it is shown as disabled by group policy. I have tried to enable system restore using the gpedit . msc command, but it doesn't work. I have formatted the system again. At present, the system is running normally and system restore can be done also. I have checked for virus also. System doesn't have any viruses. I have created two system restore points, but it is of no use in case "system restore disabled by group policy".

Firstly, Group Policy Editor is only available in Windows XP Professional. If you're using a different version, you won't be able to access it. Also, update to the latest Windows XP Service Pack 3. Try updating all your drivers for the system, and also run a thorough memory scan of the system. The random closing of the DOS window is really odd. It could be memory problems or just Windows. You should try a Windows repair instead of a reinstall. Viruses could be a problem. Try a different anti-virus or any of the free online virus scanners to be sure.
