“There was a time,” as the music goes, when desktop systems that earned high function scores on our benchmark tries were heralded as excellent-in-class devices; a time when forcing a function score into the 100s, the 130s, and still the 150s meant that a system was primed for ideal. And these velocity kings frequently added with them the excellent tech, the highest gaming frames each second, and the biggest memory capacities.
Acer’s aim AM3970 is decidedly not that. When we recommend this supremely cheap system for sending Sandy Bridge less collapsing a user’s bank account, this otherwise mundane rig extends small else to celebrate--unless you actually similar USB slots. If you do, this system is your gold mine.
An Intel Core iIII-2100 central processing unit does as this system’s heart and soul. And the 3.1GHz Sandy Bridge chip actually highlights the power of the platform on our WorldBench 6 suite of tries: The AM3970’s last score of 131 does
not fix velocity records between other Sandy Bridge-furnished budget desktops, but it surges last entire other sane priced extending with AMD or lesser Intel chips (go figure). A complete Six gigabytes of DDRIII-1333 memory and a TB drive give this all-black device the looks of power at first glance.
But that is as long as the accolades go. The AM3970 fully wusses out on gaming: Incorporated graphics send nothing on our standard Unreal Tournament III benchmark. We had to dial the game’s screen retuen to 1024 through 768 only to get frame rates in the 30s, which does n ot bode good for the graphical quality of more fresh titles that you may test to play. And do not imagine you can upgrade your way out of this consequence: The AM3970’s CPU board arrives with just one free PCI port and 2 free PCI Express x1 port, which means no PCI Express x16-based graphics board for you.
Though it may not be a graphical powerhouse, the AM3970 can at least maintain a ton of your information. No more some than V 3.5” bays await you on the inner of the system--one of them assuming up through the aforementioned TB drive. One of 2 5.25” bays stays free; the other is concerned through the system’s generic Digital Video Disc burner. Managing your way around the case’s inner would not be so hard still with the AM3970’s clumpy wiring job, but we do frown at the require to utilize screws to set up drives.
