Internet traffic in Europe and Asia was badly affected by a series of undersea cable cuts in mid December, with India and the middle east the worst hit. Concerns are growing that these cables are too sensitive and too underprotected, after similar snaps earlier this year also severely affected connectivity. Most simply lie on the sea bed and are vulnerable to ships' anchors, as well as sabotage.
