The availability of free, reliable encryption software should be a basic human right. Since the beginning of computers, equipment manufacturers have considered the protection of encryption algorithms communications oppressive government prying eyes to be one of the main uses of its software.
Incidentally, Phil Zimmermann, the creator of Pretty Good Privacy (PGP) encryption software, had in his mind as a central theme for the first time in 1991, PGP encryption. He spoke of this need, and often covered in their documentation, FAQ, and book.
At that time, as a citizen who has taken the liberty of the United States of course, I did not realize the importance of his statement. Mr. Zimmermann did. Was investigated by the U.S. government for many years - facing the prospect of a long prison sentence, and even serious charge of treason (punishable by death) - PGP make widely available for everyone to use. He spent hundreds of thousands of dollars for research, and in the face of adversity and overwhelming opposition from the unlimited resources and no money down.
In 1994, even I recognize the importance of PGP to all freedom loving peoples. In my youthful exuberance, that Zimmermann was enraged that I had personally by email a few times was being accused of being a traitor to America. I came with a schema, a reflection, it was either incredibly ballsy or can only be attributed to adolescent arrogance. My plan was to intentionally violate the U.S. against the distribution of federal statues encryption programs for foreign governments. It was an accusation that Mr. Zimmerman has artfully avoided legally and with good reason.
I was going to create a website that allows visitors to easily send a copy of PGP to chance upon an alien email recipient with a copy of the transfer automatically sent to the White House, along with a letter of protest. My idea was to reach millions of visitors to violate our "stupid" laws of encryption software on purpose and see how the U.S. Justice Department could handle a million violations. My fantasy includes the realization of how the government is ignorant, which led to changing the laws, and to drop charges against Zimmermann.
