Kaspersky Lab has recently announced through a press release to get a new patent on heuristic analysis technology in the US. The technology will enable a security rating to each of the software based oh their behavior during execution. This method is very important while detecting new malicious programs/application that is not yet known to the antivirus manufacturers.
However the analysis method does not guarantee 100% detection of all malicious programs as this would need the incorporation of new technologies to detect and block these possible threats. According to the press release the breakthrough technology is based on a system of rules which is used to assign security rating to different processes running in the computer. The technology was granted Patent No.7 530 106 by the US Patent and Trademark Office.
The technology is based on a constantly expanding system of rules where the most popular application/process used by malicious programs are indicated, such as access to different parts of the system registry or access to the Internet or to the system files, etc. Each application/process is marked through a percentage which will reflect its level of security risk. When an application/process is executed, the cumulative potential security rating of a process will increase. As the rating grows, different access restrictions to certain resources are introduced. This means the suspicious activities caused by a malicious program can be prevented at the start by blocking access to the resources it needs.
Kaspersky Lab currently has more than 30 patent applications pending in the US and Russia related to a range of innovative technologies developed by company personnel. And the company hopes to gain a large market share as a result of this innovation.
