Western Digital today announced the launch of two new models of hard drives. Both models have a capacity of 2TB and spindle speed 7200rpm. The first new 2TB drive is in a well-known series Caviar Black, and the second ─ to RE4. The disc is a version of the series RE4 server class, analogous to the consumer Caviar Black, and compared him to have a number of additional features such as RAID Time Limited Error Recovery (TLER), pressure sensors and vibration sensors that can enable Enhanced Rotary Acceleration Feed Forward (RAFF , protection from rotational vibration). Both new WD drives have a 64MB cache and 500GB of four plates, each supporting both high speed SATA 3Gb / s. Claimed manufacturer MTBF is 1.2mln hours.

Both new models also have some technical innovations that have so far not been used in other models of Western Digital hard drives, for example, technology Dual Stage Actuator (DSA), which allows more precise positioning of the head over a track. In fact, this is one positioner drive heads inside the other. Additional piezoelectric actuator makes it easier to move to a specific track, often displacing the entire Positioning Mechanism. With this technology transition within the heads of the five tracks produced almost instantaneously, which significantly increase the overall throughput and seek time, and drives RE4 helps to maintain high throughput at a time when the disk is under the influence of vibrations from the environment.

In the new WD drives are also used so-called anti-disks. This thin plate installed between all the drives and covering approximately 210 ° of a full circle. They are intended to help maintain a smooth (laminar) air flow by rotating disks. Anti-wheels reduce turbulence and lead to the altitude head more stable. In the picture you can see the top anti-drive.
