IBM announced the launch of the new processor 476FP (SoC) and reported that this version uses a new SoC design. Theoretically, the performance of the new processor will be more than twice the performance of the previous version, processor PPC 464FP-HP90. Model 476FP will operate at a frequency of 1.6GHz and have more energy 1.6Vt. Representatives of IBM informed that the new processor will have a cache L2, developed by LSI, and the block AltiVec SIMD, and will support SMP (symmetric multiprocessing).
Richard Bush (Richard Busch), director of IBM's products ASIC, said: "This compact embedded processor can meet the demands of consumers. Our collaboration with LSI combines the experience of IBM in the development of processor LSI with experience in networking and storage architectures, optimizing this kernel for compliance with the requirements of modern high-speed embedded solutions.
If the processor 476FP SoC will have higher performance than the previous solution IBM, this will lead to a new round of competition between Intel and IBM in the markets netbooks and other portable devices.
